You’ll need to hire or buy a suitable cello before booking lessons. A good-quality, well-set-up instrument in the right size helps you play comfortably and produce a clear sound.

Four strings, tuned C, G, D and A from lowest to highest, give the cello its wide, expressive range.
- Strings & fingerboard
- Pressing a string against the fingerboard changes its vibrating length and pitch.
- Bow & bridge
- The bow sets the strings vibrating; the bridge carries those vibrations into the cello’s body.
- Endpin
- The adjustable support rests on the floor to help position the instrument comfortably.
